Path to Happiness and Destiny

I found a good quote today by one of my favorite writer’s, Mark Twain. He is a very inspirational man that has written many novels about adventure. Adventure seems to be the main topic in my life at the moment, so this quote really means a lot to me:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain

Another book that I find is worth picking up and reading is “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho. Whenever I would tell someone I met along the backpacking trail about my philosophy of life, they would ask me if I had ever read the book. If you do not know the story, a quick synopsis:A young Shepard boy dreams of traveling the world for treasure. Not knowing what the treasure is, he is told by an old king to follow the “omens,” or signs, and his heart will lead his life to his ultimate destiny.

Inspired by The Alchemist

“Tell your heart that the fear and suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.” pg. 124-125 of The Alchemist

So basically, I have always trusted how I feel about a situation. If you listen to everything around you…you will be led in the right direction.

For example, when I was living in Dublin, I was ready to go home December 20th because I could not find a job and my money was quickly running out. I did not want to go home, but I was almost forced too. The day I was about to book my ticket, a local club called me regarding my resume and wanted to hire me. Therefore, I stayed, got to have an Irish Christmas at a beautiful home in Dublin with my room mates family. Then, my boyfriend came up from Greece and spent New Years with me. And of course, I got to spend more time with all the new friends I had made in Dublin. I had two amazing things happen, and if I had not followed the signs, and refused the job in Dublin and went home, I would not have had those two extra experiences happen to me.

The motto of this is to just let things happen, and follow all the paths that your heart guides you down your trail.

“When I have been truly searching for my treasure, every day has been luminous, because I’ve known that I would find it. When I have been truly searching for my treasure, I’ve discovered things along the way that I never would have seen had I not had the courage to try things that seemed impossible for a Shepard to achieve.” pg. 125 of The Alchemist.

Lindsey, I was inspired by “The Alchemist” too. My Slovenian bf told me about it and insisted I read it. He even went as far as buying it for me 🙂 It’s really good. Have you read “The Little Prince”? It’s an equally interesting book written by a Frenchman. I have an extra copy if you want it?!
