Joys (and sorrows) of Trips to Mykonos Beaches
When anticipating time Mykonos beaches, you might be conjuring up bohemian images of surreal relaxation with the gentle lapping against the soft shores of the Cycladic island.
However, what it really turns out to be is a completely different experience. Just like you, thousands of people are looking for their own slice of Mykonian paradise.
On Arrival to Mykonos Beaches
When you first enter one of Mykonos’ many beaches, you will be in awe by the beautiful landscape and various shades of blue waters. And then you will realize it: there are hundreds of people and even more ugly sunbeds thigh to thigh.
People everywhere
Ok, so you’re still set on getting some rays in. Now you need to find a spot. If you’re lucky, you can score a sunbed, but be prepared to pay anywhere from 10-30 euros for the day. Otherwise, you can lay anywhere in the sand if you can squeeze your towel in!
Sandy towels and balls in your face
Despite having lived in Mykonos for nearly 4 years, I can tell you that laying on the beach was not my favorite past time. For starters, Mykonos is a very windy island. And when the wind blows at the beach, it blows sand everywhere. EVERYWHERE. If it’s not the sand that attacks you, it’s going to be some Italian person’s ball from a game of paddle ball.

Loud music
As if the sound of the waves and gentle chatter of tavernas nearby wasn’t peaceful, you have to have the restaurants start thumping the latest house song, especially when the clock turns 5 pm. That is when it is officially party time on a majority of the beaches on Mykonos. And you cannot escape it, for the subwoofers on the beach speakers are ginormous.
The Sea
There is a lot of noise at a Mykonian beach from June-August, but the sea remains just as beautiful and serene as ever. While the beaches stay busy, the sea and salt bring a new calm if you take a dip.
Leaving
The typical tourist probably spends about 3-5 hours at the beach. On vacation, all you will be doing is eat, sleep, party, beach, repeat…so even if you have to leave, you know you’ll be back tomorrow!
